Positive Self-Talk
Have you ever heard the phrase "I am my worst critic?" That mindset is an excellent example of what negative self-talk can sound like. Negative self-talk is precisely what it sounds like; talking to yourself in a negative or degrading way. It can happen when we're feeling scared, embarrassed, inadequate, or any negative feeling! It can sound like "Wow, I am so stupid," or "I'm pathetic," or "How could I possibly have made that mistake? I must be blind." These things are examples of what we can say to ourselves that negatively affect our self-esteem and sense of worth. The inner critic can be a tough one to beat, so let's talk about some ways to help shut that harmful voice down.
First, talk to yourself the way you would speak to your favorite little kid. Whether they be your own children, cousins, nieces or nephews, or children you work with, talk to yourself the way you would talk to them. If your toddler niece makes a mistake, are you going to call her stupid? Of course not! So don't do that to yourself.
If you do catch yourself saying negative or harmful things to yourself, try to switch your focus. Combat that negative with at least two positive things about yourself!
Remember, nobody is perfect, and we all deserve grace. That includes ourselves!
